Weather Defender (weather monitoring system that was created specifically for Emergency Management Professionals and First Responders) weather map format that can store custom geographic and reference layers. These maps may be used for saving custom configurations for forecasting severe weather and may be quickly loaded for viewing custom weather forecasts.

Created using Quake gaming engine video game uncompiled map file that uses a human-readable text-based formatting. This map may be compiled into a BSP binary map file for use in such games as Half-Life, Quake, Quake 2 and Quake 3. Various map editing programs (for example Valve Hammer Editor) can be used for generating Map files. Some of these programs can also compile the map into the target BSP format. Such gaming engines as Quake, Torque, Goldsource, Dark and Unreal use MAP format.

Mapjects GRYD (operations visualization platform for energy management, security management and logistics) file with a configuration of one or several "Webparts" that are widgets which may be mashed together for producing integrated visualizations. It also contains the GIS metadata needed for displaying the information. MAP files are server-side information files and they contain the information and applications files for the software archive. A related MAPX file is used for displaying the data in the MAP file to the user using a Web page.

NAVIGON GPS navigation devices map file with a map containing roads and points of interest. These files are used by NAVIGON program for generating navigation routes and showing map data when driving.

TECkit (software that is used for text conversion) text mapping file that uses a plain text formatting and stores rules which map from one character set to another. It is compiled into a TEC file that may be used for performing the conversion.
