MAN file extension

This is a help manual (called a "man page") that is used by the Unix Man tool ( an application which is used for viewing documentation). This file stores data about a Unix command or other Unix function and may be opened within a Unix shell with the "man" command. MAN extension is rarely used for Unix man pages. Extensions 1 (.1 files) through 8 (.8 files) are usually used for manuals in one of eight sections: General user commands, System calls, C library functions, Devices and network interfaces, File formats, Games, Miscellaneous and Linux-specific kernel routines. MAN pages may be compressed using GZ compression and use the compound extension (for example ".gz.1"). These files may be opened and edited using any text editor due to their plain text formatting.
