MapSource (trip planning application provided with Garmin map product purchases) GIS file that uses an XML formatting to save a world location and a reference to such external map website as Google Maps. The file is used as a link shortcut and enables locations to be opened faster in third-party websites. WLX files generate links between the MapSource application and an external site. This enables users to browse other informational sources tp find additional information about a location. Choose "Edit" → "Preferences" → "Web Links" and then select "Add Web Link" within MapSource software to install a WLX file.

Live Mesh (Microsoft software that is used to synchronize files between computers, Windows Live SkyDrives and other storage locations) temporary file that is used to mark a file that still needs to be downloaded from a remote storage location. The file is used as a placeholder until the actual file is downloaded. These temporary files use a complex file extension for files that need to be synchronized, for example "file.jpeg.wlx". After the completing synchronization process Live Mesh program deletes the WLX file and saves the original one.
