TeX and LaTeX documents font file that does not include the font glyphs (characters) themselves but stores such information about a font as the height and width of the glyphs. The file is needed by TeX typesetting and enables a font in a separate file to be typeset in a TeX document. TFM files may be created from TrueType (TTF) fonts with "ttf2tfm" utility or from Adobe Font Metric (AFM) files with "afm2tfm" utility. Both tools are parts of various TeX and LaTeX packages. Other font formats, such as METAFONT (MF) files may be used with TFM files.
