This file is an email message with a digital signature that may be used to send protected emails which may be opened only by the intended recipient. The signature is used for verifying that the email is from who it claims to be from and that the email has not been modified during transmission. In the case that an email software does not support embedded digital signatures, a P7S file appears as an email message attachment "smime.p7s". Email applications that are compatible with P7S files use Public-Key Cryptography Standard (PKCS) #7 for signing email messages.
