MP3 file extension

Moving Picture Experts Group compressed audio format that uses "Layer 3" audio compression. It is usually used for saving music files and audio books on a hard drive and can provide near-CD quality sound (stereo 16-bit) in a file roughly 1/10 the size of WAV or AIF file. The quality of these files depends on the bit rate used for compression (128, 160, 192, 256 and 320 kbps). MP3 files are compatible with most software music players and most portable music playing devices.
