This is an email storage format that is used to organize email messages in a single text file. This format stores messages using a linked format where every message is saved after another. MBOX format was originally used by Unix hosts but now is compatible with other email programs, like Apple Mail. Apple Mail version 1.x saves MBOX files in the "/User/Library/Mail/Mailboxes/" folder. Mail version 2.x uses EMLX format that divides the messages into individual files to make them searchable by Spotlight.
