Created using the Shuttle Radar Topography Mission (SRTM) format GIS data file with global elevation data recorder during NASA space missions. The file may contain up to a one arcsecond resolution and is used to analyze the earth's topography and to generate topographical images. HGT files use longitude and latitude coordinates in their filenames, such as N05W128.hgt. HGT means "height".
