Mac OS X mountable disk image file with raw block information that is usually compressed and sometimes encrypted. It is usually used for Mac OS program installers that are downloaded from the Internet. When this file is opened it mounts a virtual disk on the desktop. DMG format is used instead of the older IMG format that was used in Mac OS Classic. Apple Disk Utility provided with Mac OS X on Apple computers is used to open DMG files. Windows Daemon Tools application is able to mount virtual drives from some DMG image files.
