Created by EBI (European Molecular Biology Laboratory outstation) compressed alignment file format that is used to save short DNA sequence read alignments which are produced from such short read aligners as BWA, BBMap, or BLAT. This format is similar to the Binary Alignment/Map (BAM) format but uses better file compression and a restructured column-oriented binary container format. Short read alignment is the process of deciphering when a sequence comes from in the genome.
